FAQ: Are students with learning differences dumb?

Many students with learning differences believe that they have no intelligence. Instead, they often feel inadequate or dumb. It’s easy to feel dumb when everybody else in your class seems to be learning easily while you are having a hard time, or getting special help that other kids don’t seem to need. Students with learning difficulties are not dumb. They, as do each one of us, simply have areas of weak brain function. The difference is that their particular weaknesses stand in the way of their learning, especially in traditional classroom settings. The goal is to sustain hope and motivation, and increase each student’s possibilities for success.
